Why Celestial navigation ?
Many people
ask "why do you care about celestial navigation, an obsolete
technology ?" - I say for fun. And
why should you care about celnav ? Of
course the GPS service is great. In fact, it is the single most
important navigation technology of the 20th century. It' s very
precise, reliable and cheap. But still, there
are a few reasons to know celnav, particularly if you are going
to blue waters:
- It´s
comfortable to know the stars will be there in case the GPS system
fails.
- Celnav
is fun and will bring you closer to the Nature and other navigation
concepts.
- The no-strings-attached
feeling.
Another
common question is "how much conventional celnav one must know
to attempt a large passage? At least the meridian passage, which
is simple and requires a single table.
