This is too small. You may be missing a few optimal courses.
If polar chart points are 5 degrees apart, using 11 branches
will cover 55 degrees of the polar chart.
May be ok. May be not.

And that changes for small wind angles. No tracks
below TWA=30deg are tested. Also, polar chart points
are closer in this range, so the "covered area" is even smaller.

A good sign that your WR is covering the best tracks
is when the isochrones extremes are bending away
from the destination.

I use at least 9 or 11 branches...

in my computer (WIndows XP), when I tried to use "tracks in a tree", the VRTool crashes.

Why ???

Hi,

Because of 2 millions limits, it's not possible to see best tracks over 36h/ 48h. With less 10 tree branches, it's possible to have at less an idea for the global road. Anyway, with the weather forecast not always reliable over few days, of course I use with at least 10 branches on 12 / 24h.

Is is possible to override this limits of 2 millions and 25% processor ?

Version 1.80 preview (beta 2 with weather routing)

Postby omar » Sat Dec 05, 2009 1:26 pm

I posted vrtool 1.80 beta 2
changes:
-Weather routing is more stable.
- Isochrones opacity
- Simpler grib import. You dont have to type lat/lon anymore. Just select grib file.
- Changed temporary degrib files to Windows temp folder.

This build is available only in zip format (I will do the installer soon)

http://www.tecepe.com.br/nav/vrtool/vrtool.zip

Download and unzip the executable.

Re: Version 1.80 beta 2 testing

Postby Photophore » Sun Dec 06, 2009 10:39 am

Hi,

I am testing the version 1.80 b2 on Win XP.
Here are my findings:
- import of the boat position and wind from firefox cache: in the boat panel, the wind strength and the TWA are correct but the wind direction is wrong (180° instead of 325°).
- import of grib files is not completely correct. I use the option to use forecast of 9:00 and 18:00. I get the right wind directions but the wind strengthes are wrong (20.4 kn instead of 21.1, 20.4 instead of 20.0) => seems to be a problem of conformance with the wind speed table used by Virtual Regatta
- import of grib files: it would be nice if you add the ability to use directly compressed grib files, like the ones we get with Zygrib (.bz2 format). Nb: for that, sharpziblib.dll available on the web can provide the decompression functionality.
- I have tried to make a raw import and to select then the winds to be displayed in the wnd panel, but I could not get any display. => don't know if it's a bug or if it's due to the fact that I don't know how to use this option
- Weather routing: It would be nice if the current target and the current boat position were imported by default in the Weather routing panel
- Weather routing: the panel allows only one figure after the decimal sign for angle minutes. It would be better to allow 2 figures, like in the Boat panel where you specify the target
- Weather routing: when I try to compute the routes, I see briefly in the message panel "isochrone 3" then VRtool crashes

So, Vrtool is going in the right direction but version 1.80 still need some debug and enhancements.

Nb: of course, I can provide the grib file and the current position data on the Clipper leg4 if that helps.

Regards,
Photophore

Mixed news works fine on Windows XP Desk top and Vista on Laptop.
Crashes on Vista on Desk top with this message " Access violation at address 005A5266 in module "VRTool.exe" Read of address 0019007C.

In english :
when I try to use weather routing, VRTOOL is trash.

In french:
Quand j'essaie d'utiliser "weather routing", VRTOOL plante. Quelqu'un a-t-il une explication ?

Thanks.

Still some problems... Here it is working fine in two test machines
( a 4GB/4core Xeon/Vista and a small 1GB/Atom/XP netbook )
To help me fix that, I need detailled test data for crash conditions.
Unfortunatelly, it is difficult to reproduce the same conditions
in the case of weather routing :(

Test data desired:
-Winds XML - save it in vrtool format
-Time of calculation in relation to wind change time (i.e. wind age)
-WR start and destination Lat/Lon
-Weather routing parameters (isochrone, branches, angles, recursion etc)
-Machine spec: processor/memory/Windows version

 Please send the data package as a private forum message.

Regarding grib files, I have no clue why vrtool grib imports
do not match vr game winds. What I'm doing is taking
grib data (probing with degrib) for two times of the day
(6:00 and 18:00 defaults), converting windspeeds to km/h
and rounding to integer values then converting back to knts.
Seems to work sometimes, not other. May be the kind of probing
done by degrib is not the same used in the game.

I have tested using bzip2
to unzip compressed zyGrib grb.bz2 files
before importing to vrtool. Works fine.

bzip2 and zyGrib are freewares and can
be downloaded from:

Omar, there is something wrong in that process: after import, wind directions are correct but wind speeds are wrong, at least on the display on the map.
See the MP I sent to you and I send you a data file to enable to test on your platform.
(Correction dec 13: my MP has been blocked in the outbox for 24h => I don't know how to send you data)
